Cabbage patch dolls
Cabbage Patch dolls are part of one of the longest-running
American doll franchises. Although they are commonly called dolls, the
toys are more technically called Cabbage Patch Kids. Created in 1978
by Debbie Morehead and Xavier Roberts, they were one of the most popular
toy fads of the eighties.
Originally, Cabbage Patch dolls were completely cloth. They were sold
at local craft shows. After this they were available from the Babyland
General Hospital. This was an old clinic located in Cleveland, Georgia
which was converted into a retail location.
Cabbage patch dolls were originally sold as "Little People."
Xavier Roberts is the main name behind the company, however he did have
the help of four women in their creation. Eventually, the franchise
grew to include such things as cartoons and board games.
